How good are we at predicting where we’ll be in 10 years? If I look back to any given year, any of my 10-year predictions would have turned out to be wildly off. Here are some examples:
At 19, I was working in retail after earning a 2-year degree. I expected that this was where my career was headed and had no plans to go back to school. I was single and still living in my mom’s house.
At 29, I had earned my 4-year degree and was working in Boston for Liberty Mutual. I expected I would be there for the foreseeable future. Trish and I had recently married and we lived in downtown Salem, MA.
At 39, I was preparing to move from our house in Swampscott to London on an ex-Pat assignment for State Street Bank. We had recently adopted a Siberian Husky named Silver after our first Husky (Schobel) passed away in the Spring. I expected to continue my career in internal auditing, maybe achieving Senior Vice President in a few more years.
At 49, we lived in Chocorua, NH with our third rescued Husky, Roli. I retired from internal auditing a few years ago and have been building a business as a movement therapist using Applied Movement Neurology.
Who can say where I’ll be at 59? Where have you been along your journey compared to what you expected?
