Be worth following

If you want to be a leader, be worth following.

First, lead by example. Inspire people through action and model the behavior you value. “Do as I say, not as I do” will not endear you to anyone.

Second, empower the people around you to be their best. Find ways to motivate people and challenge them. The tedium that comes with any job can be offset by the fulfillment of moving towards your full potential.

Finally, create a feedback-rich environment. Ask for feedback, graciously thank people for it and act on it. Welcoming and responding to feedback creates credibility and encourages continuous improvement.

“Some leaders are at the top of the hill, yelling down to the people in the mud telling them you can make it. Great leaders are down in the mud dragging people up the hill, telling them we can make it.”
-Janey Brown
