Analogies

Trish and I were talking about analogies and I mentioned that they are all flawed. She challenged me as to whether that was really true. I asked her to give me an analogy that was perfect. Amusingly, she responded that she could not think of any analogies on the spot.

A couple minutes later, I told her I had an analogy for her. “You are like the butter to my fresh-baked bread. I am good without you, but I am even better with you.” Hey, it’s not perfect, but I thought it was pretty good. (She was pretty happy with it, too.)

By the way, my “time is like money” analogy yesterday has a clear flaw. You can save up money for later, but you can’t save up time for later. That’s the reality of analogies. They help us understand something quickly based on familiar concepts, but they have their limits.

Can you think of any analogies that are perfect or do you have one you love?
