For a long time, I resisted the idea of audiobooks. I love books and I thought listening would not be the same as reading.

When I needed something to listen to beyond podcasts, I decided to give audiobooks a go. I was right, it’s not the same. In some ways it’s better.

For a small monthly fee, I have access to a whole library of books from which to choose. If I start a book and don’t like it, I can find something new on the spot.

With the right narrator, books really come alive. I recently listened to The Graveyard Book, read by the author, Neil Gaiman. The story is amazing, his voice made it even better. Before that, I listened to The Alchemist, read by Jeremy Irons. Wow! Some people were meant to tell stories.

I still read paper books and e-books, but audiobooks have opened up new possibilities. I wonder what other traditions I should be willing to expand upon.

What’s your favorite way to consume books?

I prefer to read books, but I enjoy listening to audiobooks. I thought that books on paper were what I wanted and was resistant to eBooks, but now that I have tried them I think they make more sense because they don’t take up space in your home!
