One of my favorite podcasts at the moment is The Mindstrong Project. In episode #48, Rachel Balkovec shared some of her experience with a topic close to my heart, the importance of culture in an organization. I also really enjoyed hearing how she dealt with adversity and found surprising value in a job that was not the one she wanted.

Towards the end of the episode, she talked about the importance of personal growth and how she drives change by asking questions. Paraphrasing a bit, “Is this really who I want to be? Am I holding myself back?” She goes on to say something along the lines of, “Unintentional growth is hard, but you look back and appreciate it. Intentional growth is harder, you have to choose the discomfort. Look in the deepest, darkest corners that you are avoiding…that is probably where you need to focus.”

It was a great conversation with so many nuggets of wisdom. I have no doubt she will have a profound impact on any organization she leads.

When is the last time you chose discomfort in pursuit of growth?
