The value of early feedback

The value of early feedback

We went to a wedding a few weeks ago and I wore dress clothes that had been languishing in my closet. The trousers felt more snug than I expected. I realized that wearing forgiving workout clothes every day might be hiding the fact that my waist is expanding.

Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to wear super comfortable clothes. I cannot imagine going back to wearing suits to work. Even so, there’s value in wearing things that tell me when I’m heading in the wrong direction. Without that feedback, it’s easy to get way off track before I start to make course corrections.

How do you know whether the choices you make are hurting or helping?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Am I part of the problem?

Am I part of the problem?

I've heard it said that if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. I saw recently that Apple has settled a class action lawsuit for not communicating well enough that they throttled performance on phones with old batteries. It seems a bit of...

Don’t just do something, stand there

Don’t just do something, stand there

Sometimes we feel compelled to take quick action when we should pause and reflect. The best course may be to buy time. Maybe someone asks you a challenging question in an interview or other high-risk situation. Instead of immediately giving an answer, buy some time....

Choose your words like your life depends on it

Choose your words like your life depends on it

Our words reflect how we think and affect what we do or don’t do. Trish and I were discussing this, reflecting on how often we say, "I need to…” or "I should…” or even, “We should think about…” The downfall of these words is that they defer action. If we’re honest, we...

Unexpected delight (by Trish)

Unexpected delight (by Trish)

Jim, Roli and I have a few favorite places that we like to go to on the weekends for a short hike and a swim in the warm weather. One of these is off the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountain National Forest. It is a beautiful, winding stretch of road with many...

I’m wrong about something

I’m wrong about something

There are things I now believe to be true that I previously thought were false. There are other things that I was sure were true that I no longer believe. The phrase that describes my idea of a good way to live comes from Ryan Holiday, “Strong Opinions Loosely Held.”...

Competing goals

Competing goals

You can’t have your cake and it too. If you eat it, you no longer have it. Then again, what’s the point of having it if you don’t eat it. Goals are often like this, competing with another. I want to reduce our debt and increase our savings. I can do one quickly or...

Need or want?

Need or want?

Sometimes you get so used to feeling a certain way, you don’t realize how much better you could be. The only way to find out is to try something different. For our latest experiment, Trish and I decided to give up coffee for August. Trish only dinks decaf, so it...

Struggle to learn

Struggle to learn

Or maybe I should have titled it, To learn, struggle. We tend to learn more through our struggles than when things come easily. I remember a presentation in which the speaker talked about all of the ideal ways of doing things and didn’t address how to overcome issues....

Do you dig it? (by Trish)

Do you dig it? (by Trish)

Lately, Roli has taken to digging in a corner of the backyard on an almost daily basis. This usually happens upon return from a fun outdoor adventure or a boisterous round of hide and seek in the house (his favorite game). Jim has dubbed the digging spot...

There is no accounting for taste

There is no accounting for taste

Trish and I were talking about writing styles and it got me thinking. For every creative art, there are many styles. Everyone has their favorite, but who’s to say which is best? As a creator, you have to do something that feels right. Choose a style that you love, one...

Personal growth opportunities (by Trish)

Personal growth opportunities (by Trish)

Am I a slow walker, a fast walker or somewhere in between? Well, it depends… When Jim, Roli and I hike together, I am often the slowest. When I walk with other people, however, I am often in the lead. So, in this example, it depends who I compare myself to. If I am on...
