Be honest and be kind

Be honest and be kind

Sometimes people speak bluntly despite how it makes other people feel. Rationalizing your bluntness by saying that you’re being honest is a poor defense.

You can be honest and still be considerate of other people’s feelings. People are more likely to appreciate your honesty when your tactful.

Are you unapologetically blunt, find ways to be tactfully honest or use white lies instead?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Hits and misses

Hits and misses

The more shots you take, the more hits you’re likely to get. You'll also have more misses and it’s a price worth paying. If you try to avoid misses, you take few shots and may end up with fewer hits in the end. The person who tries to make every attempt perfect...

Probabilities can be misleading

Probabilities can be misleading

Unlikely and rare events sometimes occur. When they do, that does not make them more likely. A few weeks back, I had a typo in one of my blog posts. Trish said she was really surprised because it was so unusual. A bit frustrated that I had not caught my mistake before...

Pressure and buffers

Pressure and buffers

If you’re subject to deadlines, it can be helpful to build a buffer. Operating without a buffer can also be good, as uncomfortable as it may be. The best approach may be to develop both capabilities. Preparing your deliverables ahead of schedule takes some pressure...

Experience versus time

Experience versus time

One of the keys to long-term success is knowing when to say no. When you lack experience that you need, saying yes to every opportunity makes sense. The experience you gain is worth more than your time. Being very choosy might prevent you from making progress. Sooner...

Limited but local (by Trish)

Limited but local (by Trish)

Since the start of the pandemic, I have been doing my best to minimize my trips to the grocery store. By the end of this past week, I was running low on vegetables but was not at all enamored with the idea of heading to the grocery store with all the other 4th of July...

Do it right (or skip it)

Do it right (or skip it)

If you don’t have time to do something right, you won’t have time to fix it. Commit to doing it right or don't commit to begin with. The alternative is to take on tasks when you don’t have time and then build a reputation for shoddy work or being late. What do you do...

Avoid problems (as best you can)

Avoid problems (as best you can)

Avoiding one problem is worth solving two. Because there’s no need to solve problems you avoid, you may even free up time and energy to focus on what’s important to you. It’s tough to build something new when you’re fighting fires. Urgent problems can overwhelm...

Patience and perseverance

You can lead a husky to water, but you can’t make him swim. Ever since we adopted Roli, he has loved going in the water, but would only swim a little. As soon as he started floating, he would get scared and return to where he could touch bottom. Trish and I have been...

Take a trial run

Take a trial run

Sometimes we dream about moving somewhere, adopting a pet or buying that thing that will give us a big breakthrough. It can be disappointing and expensive if reality does not live up to our dreams. Many years ago, Trish and I considered moving to San Francisco so we...

The power is yours

The power is yours

If someone hands you something, do you reflexively accept it or first consider whether you want it? If you pause and consider what they are offering, you might say, “No, thank you” and move on unencumbered. The same is true if someone expresses angst or complains...

Weird advice

Weird advice

One of the headlines in a National Geographic virus update email I received: "Here are the vaccines that you should keep an eye on" Excuse me, I should keep an eye on vaccine development? This seems very odd considering I’m not a scientist or medical professional. I'm...

The path forward

The path forward

There is a big difference between considering a change and deciding to make a change. For me, considering a change means it’s often on my mind. While I’m on my current path, I often think about the potential future path and where it might lead me. Sometimes this leads...
