Choice versus obligation

Choice versus obligation

If you’re a loyal reader, you might have noticed that I did not publish a blog yesterday. What happened!?

We had guests for the weekend and I realized I hadn’t finished a blog just as I was going to bed. In the past, I would have pulled out my computer and got it done even at the cost of getting a good night’s sleep. Not this time; I recently decided that the blog was not my priority.

After reflecting on how I’ve been spending my time, I realized I wanted to spend more time reading and learning. I decided that I would give up my daily blog to free up some time. As sometimes happens, deciding that I didn’t need to write every day made the process a bit easier. Without the pressure, I wrote a bunch of blog posts with little effort and kept publishing daily…until yesterday.

So here we are. I will still publish new blogs as long as I can accomplish my more important tasks first. Without the pressure of imminent deadlines, maybe it will bring me even more joy. 😀

What do you do that seems a lot easier when you don’t see it as an obligation?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Overcommitted (by Trish)

Overcommitted (by Trish)

When we first moved to NH three years ago, I volunteered to serve on multiple local committees. With plenty of time to spare, I really enjoyed it and met some great people. Over the past couple of years, since I began working full-time (and multiple jobs), my...

Right action, wrong reasons

Right action, wrong reasons

You can do the right things even when you’re wrong about why it’s right. It may be unwise to focus on the reasons when the action is what matters. In the 1800s, Ignaz Semmelweis figured out that performing autopsies before delivering babies was causing undue deaths....

Platinum beats gold

Platinum beats gold

I used to believe the golden rule was the standard for treating others well. Recently, I have been reading about an even better way to behave, the platinum rule: “Treat others how they need to be treated.” If you’re not sure how someone needs to be treated, the golden...

Start often to accomplish more

Start often to accomplish more

If you want to create a lot of anything, you need to start frequently and finish regularly. With creative endeavors, this seems even more true. Achieving your vision might be challenging and you need to allow for missing the mark on some attempts. Many of the photos I...

First dibs!

First dibs!

A couple nights ago, Trish, Roli and I were hanging out on our porch. Trish and I were each sitting on chairs with Roli on the floor. I went in to turn on a light and Roli took the opportunity to quietly climb onto the chair I had been using. Admittedly, he uses it...

My gym reopened and I’m feeling it. I went to two classes last week and two more this week. As usual, I did plenty of things I wouldn't do on my own. I did lots of running, rowing, burpees, push-ups and plenty of other things that will help me become more fit. Most of...

Am I part of the problem?

Am I part of the problem?

I've heard it said that if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. I saw recently that Apple has settled a class action lawsuit for not communicating well enough that they throttled performance on phones with old batteries. It seems a bit of...

Don’t just do something, stand there

Don’t just do something, stand there

Sometimes we feel compelled to take quick action when we should pause and reflect. The best course may be to buy time. Maybe someone asks you a challenging question in an interview or other high-risk situation. Instead of immediately giving an answer, buy some time....

Choose your words like your life depends on it

Choose your words like your life depends on it

Our words reflect how we think and affect what we do or don’t do. Trish and I were discussing this, reflecting on how often we say, "I need to…” or "I should…” or even, “We should think about…” The downfall of these words is that they defer action. If we’re honest, we...

Unexpected delight (by Trish)

Unexpected delight (by Trish)

Jim, Roli and I have a few favorite places that we like to go to on the weekends for a short hike and a swim in the warm weather. One of these is off the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountain National Forest. It is a beautiful, winding stretch of road with many...

Seek fulfillment

Some people seek money, others seek fame, power or accolades. The wisest among us seek fulfillment. No matter what else you achieve, lack of fulfillment leaves you wanting. When you’re fulfilled, anything you lack seems insignificant. If you seek something other than...

Use action to change your state

The fastest way to change your emotional state may be action. Even if you believe you’re stuck in a rut, actions can override how you feel. After Movement for Longevity class last night, a few people commented on how differently they felt. Two people had been feeling...
