The best diet

The best diet

Do you know what the best diet is? The one that helps you reach your goals with the food that you’re willing to eat or unwilling to give up.

Yes, I’m being a bit cheeky.

It’s still true. A person who is focused on minimizing cancer risk and is vegetarian needs a different diet than the person focused on brain health who has high sensitivity to a lot of vegetables.

The best thing you can do is determine your goal, identify the foods that will help you get there and then decide which ones you’re willing to eat. It’s also helpful to know which foods will prevent you from getting there and decide which ones you’ll avoid. Once you decide what to avoid, “cheating” on your diet is really just cheating yourself.

What’s the best diet for you?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Idiosyncrasy

Idiosyncrasy

If you spend a lot of time alone, you might start behaving oddly without realizing it. Apparently I have taken to muttering to myself a lot and making a smacking noise before I speak. I noticed the muttering when Trish kept asking me to repeat things she hadn’t heard....

Stop and think

Stop and think

One of the responses to Get back on the horse was someone who wants to watch eating habits & make better choices. I’m in the same boat so I suggested a challenge for the next week: When we’re reaching for the bad choice, ask ourselves, “Is it worth it?” She added,...

Fulfillment

Fulfillment

If what you do isn’t fulfilling, it won’t matter how much you get done. You will always be unfulfilled and seeking more. If what you do is fulfilling, it won’t matter how much you get done. You will be fulfilled even when you could do more. The lesson is that it...

A small effort is better than none

A small effort is better than none

I sometimes put off giving Roli an afternoon walk, thinking it’s going to be a big effort…Get him in the car, drive down to the lake, walk around for 30 or 40 minutes, back in the car to drive home. Then we get into the garage and he walks past the car to go to the...

Daily gratitude (by Trish)

Daily gratitude (by Trish)

Ten years ago, when Jim and I moved to London for his job, I experienced some level of angst while figuring out what to do next in my career. As amazing as it was to have some time off to explore a new place, I found it challenging to be in a period of transition. A...

Get back on the horse

Get back on the horse

We sometimes get out of the routine of pursuing our passions. Avoid it for too long and your skills degrade. It might get to the point that you give up and feel like you can’t get it back. What if you can? After neglecting my handstand practice for too long, I decided...

The value of short form

The value of short form

One of the early decisions I made about this blog is to keep the posts relatively short. In a world where people receive too many emails, people might actually read short, punchy blog posts instead of saving them for later. As much as I write for myself, making an...

What’s driving your risk?

What’s driving your risk?

I keep reading about people getting rescued from nearby mountains. In some recent cases, the rescues were easily avoidable. If people had flashlights (torches for my UK friends), they probably would have been fine after dark. If they had started their hikes earlier in...

Accountability

Accountability

Sometimes we know what we need to do and accountability keeps us doing it. It may be enough to know someone else is paying attention. A daily publishing deadline is what keeps me writing. I often consider moving to a different schedule to give myself a break. Then I...

Challenging and achievable

Challenging and achievable

We’ve wrapped up another month of our online Movement for Longevity classes. Each person has their own strengths and weaknesses and it takes some trial and error to find what they need. My favorite phrase, “challenging and achievable” describes how to know what’s...

Think different

Think different

Games often hold valuable lessons for life. One recent lesson I learned is that it’s unwise to assume other people think like we do. One of my sisters brought over a new dice game last night. Each player rolls 6 dice and the other players cannot see what you have. You...

Choose your path

Choose your path

We all have the same amount of time each day even if it doesn't feel this way. If you don’t have time to do what you want to do, find a way to make different choices. When you’re too busy to follow your dreams, it’s only a matter of time until you end up somewhere you...
