Irrational guilt

Irrational guilt

Dreams sometimes seem so real that waking up isn’t enough to shake off the feelings of what you experienced. You may feel as if the events actually happened even when you know they were imagined. It’s one of the challenges of being human; our rational brains sometimes struggle to overcome our irrational thoughts.

Have you ever felt guilty about something you did in a dream?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Perspective

Perspective

Whether events are good or bad depends on your perspective. School closures are a bummer for a lot of people that are losing social connection, a safe space or their best opportunity to learn. For others, it might be relief from a terrible situation. What if you have...

Welcome distractions

Welcome distractions

It’s amazing how productive you can be when trying to avoid a particular task. As I was preparing to write a blog post, I managed to create my to do list for next week, catch up on a bunch of emails and tidy the kitchen and dining room. Maybe that’s one of the keys to...

Reach out

Reach out

Listening to an old Def Leppard album today reminded me of a long-lost friend. We haven’t spoken in over 10 years and I remembered that it was once his favorite album. I decided it had been too long so I called his old number, hoping it might still be good. The...

Boundaries

One of the challenges of working from home is that anytime you’re home, you’re also at work. If your partner also frequently works at home, you can thoughtlessly work too much. It’s even more challenging when most of the work you do at home is online. Any time you’re...

Tastes change

I enjoy a lot of things that I didn’t like when I was younger. I regularly eat squash and spinach, sometimes even meatloaf. I listen to all types of music, including bands and genres that I was sure I didn’t like. With food, it was just a matter of trying something...

Discounts are expensive

During the recent business restrictions, our gym participated in a “Stay for May” promotion. If I kept my membership active to support the gym while they were closed, I would get $100 to spend across four brands ($25 each) towards purchases in June. I planned to keep...

Invisible linchpins

Invisible linchpins

Some things are nearly invisible when working well. When not working well, their critical function is glaringly obvious. I called our bank to find out why our debit cards stopped working. The phone connections were so bad on my first two attempts that I ended the...

Difficult conversations

Difficult conversations

Sooner or later we all need to have difficult conversations. The only sure way to avoid such conversations is to isolate yourself from other people. As tempting as it might seem at times, it’s not a sustainable approach. The more significant the issue, the sooner you...

Discipline

Discipline

Trish was working on her weekly guest blog and she said she wasn’t feeling it. She switched to another draft she had in progress and still wasn’t feeling it. In the end, she fought through her malaise and got it done. That’s one of the hallmarks of discipline. You...

Need or want?

Need or want?

Sometimes you get so used to feeling a certain way, you don’t realize how much better you could be. The only way to find out is to try something different. For our latest experiment, Trish and I decided to give up coffee for August. Trish only dinks decaf, so it...

Struggle to learn

Struggle to learn

Or maybe I should have titled it, To learn, struggle. We tend to learn more through our struggles than when things come easily. I remember a presentation in which the speaker talked about all of the ideal ways of doing things and didn’t address how to overcome issues....
