Weird advice

Weird advice

One of the headlines in a National Geographic virus update email I received:

“Here are the vaccines that you should keep an eye on”

Excuse me, I should keep an eye on vaccine development? This seems very odd considering I’m not a scientist or medical professional. I’m sure I will hear about it if someone miraculously develops a Covid-19 vaccine that was rigorously tested and believed to be safe.

Here is what I know:

  • The fastest vaccine ever developed took between 4 and 5 years.
  • Nobody has developed a vaccine for any of the other coronaviruses.
  • If someone beats the odds, everyone will hear about it.

It’s a sad state of affairs here in America. TV commercials tell me to ask my doctor about medications and now Nat Geo tells me to keep my eye on vaccines in development.

What’s the strangest advice you’ve received?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Life in a beautiful state revisited

Life in a beautiful state revisited

It’s been more than a year since I wrote one of my favorite blog posts, Life in a beautiful state. The experience and reflection that inspired that post was so life-changing that I also wrote Life in a beautiful state - Part 2. Since then, I’ve been much happier, with...

Time suckage

Working on our website recently made me realize that technology can be like a time machine. I sit down to change a few things, then time seems to go by in a blink and I have accomplished little if anything. In a few sessions, I learned a bunch of things, but made no...

Fulfilling beats productive

Fulfilling beats productive

Trish and I killed the day yesterday by sleeping in, having a leisurely breakfast, then going on a long hike with Roli up Whitehorse Ledge and across to Cathedral Ledge. Although we didn’t have much to show for all the time we spent, it was a fulfilling way to spend...

Perfectly unexpected (by Trish)

Before writing my "How long is a piece of string?" blog post, I jokingly posed that question to Jim. Without batting an eye or missing a beat, he answered, very confidently… with a perfectly, unexpected answer… “As deep as a hole!?" We both got a good laugh as we...

RBF be gone!

RBF be gone!

Most people seem to have either resting bitch face (RBF) or resting nice face. I’m not sure what drives it, but I’ve been wondering whether it’s simply practice. The more often you hold an expression, the easier it becomes. Eventually, the expression you use most most...

No regrets

It’s easy to look back at past decisions and think, I should have done it differently. I sometimes think I should have spent less and saved more in my 20s and 30s. When we lived in London, maybe we should have kept that Swampscott house for rental property instead of...

Platinum beats gold

Platinum beats gold

I used to believe the golden rule was the standard for treating others well. Recently, I have been reading about an even better way to behave, the platinum rule: “Treat others how they need to be treated.” If you’re not sure how someone needs to be treated, the golden...

Start often to accomplish more

If you want to create a lot of anything, you need to start frequently and finish regularly. With creative endeavors, this seems even more true. Achieving your vision might be challenging and you need to allow for missing the mark on some attempts. Many of the photos I...

First dibs!

First dibs!

A couple nights ago, Trish, Roli and I were hanging out on our porch. Trish and I were each sitting on chairs with Roli on the floor. I went in to turn on a light and Roli took the opportunity to quietly climb onto the chair I had been using. Admittedly, he uses it...

My gym reopened and I’m feeling it. I went to two classes last week and two more this week. As usual, I did plenty of things I wouldn't do on my own. I did lots of running, rowing, burpees, push-ups and plenty of other things that will help me become more fit. Most of...

Sometimes we dream about moving somewhere, adopting a pet or buying that thing that will give us a big breakthrough. It can be disappointing and expensive if reality does not live up to our dreams. Many years ago, Trish and I considered moving to San Francisco so we...

The power is yours

The power is yours

If someone hands you something, do you reflexively accept it or first consider whether you want it? If you pause and consider what they are offering, you might say, “No, thank you” and move on unencumbered. The same is true if someone expresses angst or complains...
