Opportunity cost

Opportunity cost

All the time we spend doing one thing is time we could have spent doing something else. Before you spend hours binging Netflix or scrolling through social media, think about what are you giving up. Even if what you’re doing is more productive than entertainment, it’s worth thinking about.

It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. If I took all the time I spend writing and applied it to something else, what could I accomplish?

Writing has done me so much good that giving up my daily blog is not a decision I take lightly. While I mull it over, I am making an effort to write more efficiently to free up time. Lowering the cost makes it easier to keep going and accomplish other things.

If you took the time you spend on one of your daily habits to do something else, what could you accomplish?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Chores no longer seem like chores

Chores no longer seem like chores

As I was cleaning up the dishes 15 minutes after dinner a couple nights ago, I realized how much I have changed. When I was a child and young adult, I avoided doing dishes and probably whined a bit when I had to do them. Maybe the key to my change was repetition. From...

An honest self-assessment

An honest self-assessment

I recently realized that I’m not as good at listening as I previously believed. I was involved in two heated debates over the weekend. Upon reflection, both could have been avoided if I had listened more effectively. I’ve also been interrupting people which is almost...

Surprisingly connected

Even though we are spending more time at home and not seeing our friends at the gym or our local shops, I feel like we’re even more connected than usual. Even though we’re physical distancing, we are even more social. Just this weekend, we had multiple Zoom calls with...

Intractable problems

Ask for and accept help

Ask for and accept help

I am all for asking for help when I need it. At the same time, I sometimes resist help if I didn’t ask for it. I like to believe I am self-sufficient and sometimes take unsolicited help as a judgment of my competence. When I stop to think about it, people offering...

We’ve always done it this way

We’ve always done it this way

Sometimes when questioned why you do something, the response is, “We’ve always done it this way.” That might be true, but is it the best way? This came up frequently in my prior career as an internal auditor. Of course, it’s easier to apply this thinking to someone...

Change up your rotation

Change up your rotation

It’s easy to get into a routine. We tend to enjoy the same food, music and wine every week. It takes some effort to break the cycle and keep things fresh. We have a rotation of meals that we eat just about every every week. Occasionally one of us finds a new recipe to...

The power of priority

The power of priority

When you decide what's most important to you, that priority can be a great guide for making decisions. The more choices you make that align with your priority, the better you feel. Stray from the path and you may feel guilty or rationalize that you’ll get to it...

Great goals drive action

Great goals drive action

Many of us have had goals that we never achieved. I wonder how many of us took action and fell short. It seems more likely that we didn’t take the necessary action. Think about a goal you would like to achieve and then consider what action you can take today (or right...
