Wealthy is a state of mind

Wealthy is a state of mind

When I was younger, I was motivated by money. Part of it was seeing many of my friends growing up with more than I had. I was foolish enough to think that having more money would make me happier.

At some point I realized money would only take me so far. More important is having gratitude for what you have and recognizing it’s more than you need. As long as you have more than you need, you’ll always be wealthy.

How do you remind yourself to feel gratitude for the wealth you have?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Assume good intentions – retail edition

Assume good intentions – retail edition

I previously wrote about assuming good intentions in relationships. The same advice applies to dealing with your customers. It's time to let go of another unpleasant memory. I went in to grab a drink at an underground station convenience store. When I got to the...

Fend off your cravings

Fend off your cravings

When you get a craving, one of the tactics to fend it off is to delay it by telling yourself, “Maybe later." If you wait long enough, it might pass and you will skip it altogether. Another route is to decide when you will indulge. If you decide, "I don’t have treats...

Keep it simple

Keep it simple

When you’re ready to solve a problem, try simple solutions first. You may be surprised at how often simple works best. Complex solutions are best for when simple no longer works. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. If you’re always tired, you probably need...

Sleep is underrated

Sleep is underrated

As Trish and I have been reminded this weekend, acute sleep deprivation makes you feel awful. We took a redeye flight with uncomfortable seats and both felt like death warmed over most of the day. Chronic sleep deprivation in small amounts is more sneaky. For most of...

Play the long game

Play the long game

We’re at the airport getting ready to head home. We have a different airline to get home and they charge extra for carry on items. Seriously? If we don’t pay, you leave all the overheads empty? You’re going to charge me to put a bag under the seat in front of me? At...

Harder than it looks

Harder than it looks

Trish and I are enjoying a weekend in Las Vegas with some friends. We stumbled on an artist making pictures with spray paint. From start to finish, he produced a beautiful picture in less than 10 minutes. He did it again and again and made it look easy. I wonder how...

A tale of two worlds

A tale of two worlds

It’s funny how many videos and memes are going around showing the outlandish things people are doing now that they’re stuck at home for days on end. It’s especially funny to me because I’ve primarily worked from home for the past few years and have already made this...

Why should I believe you?

Why should I believe you?

There are a lot of conspiracy theories going around at the moment. One of things that seems common is that they claim to be an authority and maybe even claim to have scientific evidence. Sometimes these theories are shared by someone you trust. If the source is...

You can do it! (by Trish)

You can do it! (by Trish)

Until my mid-thirties (well before I was a health coach), I routinely ate cereal, a muffin or a bagel for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and pasta for dinner. Tortellini with Alfredo sauce was one of my absolute favorites. Cheese and crackers were a staple in my diet...

“Free” products

“Free” products

We should be wary of companies that give away their “products” as part of their business models. Many social media and big tech companies give away what we think of as their “products.” What we use is not really their product. In fact, our attention is the product...

Discounts are expensive

Discounts are expensive

During the recent business restrictions, our gym participated in a “Stay for May” promotion. If I kept my membership active to support the gym while they were closed, I would get $100 to spend across four brands ($25 each) towards purchases in June. I planned to keep...

Invisible linchpins

Invisible linchpins

Some things are nearly invisible when working well. When not working well, their critical function is glaringly obvious. I called our bank to find out why our debit cards stopped working. The phone connections were so bad on my first two attempts that I ended the...
