Take a trial run

Take a trial run

Sometimes we dream about moving somewhere, adopting a pet or buying that thing that will give us a big breakthrough. It can be disappointing and expensive if reality does not live up to our dreams.

Many years ago, Trish and I considered moving to San Francisco so we took a vacation there. Even though vacation is not like daily life, getting a sense of the area seemed worthwhile. After 4 or 5 days in the heart of the city, we realized it was too urban and sprawling for us. Maybe we could have made it work, but it didn’t seem worth the risk. That vacation helped us avoid potential disaster.

Life with dogs is great, a lot of work and not for everyone. If you’re considering getting a dog, maybe you can dog-sit for one of your friends for a few days to see what it’s really like. If you’re sure you want a certain breed, find an online group of owners and see what they rave (and cry) about. At least you’ll have an idea of what you’re getting yourself into.

Thinking about buying an expensive camera, lens or other expensive gear? It might be worth renting for a few days or a week. If using it changes your life, you’ll feel great about plunking down your money to own it. If not, you’ll be glad you tried it first.

If you’re considering a life-changing decision or getting ready to chase a dream, how could you test it first?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

TGIF

It can be challenging overcoming the momentum of the week. A late football game on Sunday leads to a late start on Monday…Trying to get everything done on Monday leads to another late night…This leads to another late start on Tuesday. Add a snowstorm and you end with...

Can’t versus don’t

Can’t versus don’t

When you tell yourself or others that you can’t do something (that tempts you), you're destined to fail. If you are trying to break a daily ice cream habit, saying, “I can’t eat ice cream.” is asking for trouble. You're sending a message of deprivation built on...

Now or never

Now or never

When time is of the essence, seize the moment. Once it’s past, there's no going back. I was working this afternoon and planned to take Roli for a walk when I finished. I looked out the window and saw amazing colors shining through the trees. Change of plans - walk...

See what’s possible

See what’s possible

To accelerate your progress or bust through plateaus, surround yourself with people that are better than you. Your ego might take a hit, but it’ll be worth it. When you see what’s possible, you’re more likely to overcome your own limiting beliefs. There’s an old...

Where are you headed?

Where are you headed?

My December challenge is to look at my actions each day and reflect on who I'm becoming as a result of those actions. The first day was interesting. Before I did some of my usual Sunday stuff, I stopped and thought about it. I took Roli on a nice hike as usual....

Process beats goals

Process beats goals

It’s hard to believe that 2019 is almost over. A month from now, many people will seek a new start with the ever popular New Year’s resolution. I’m not a big fan of the tradition. If you want to make a change, why wait until the new year? On the other hand, if a new...

Playing by the rules

Playing by the rules

If you want to win, you need to know the rules. You also need to know whether other people are playing by the same rules. If you assume everyone follows the rules, cheaters will catch you flat-footed. When you’re playing against someone who cheats, winning is a lot...

Fool me once

Fool me once

Honesty is one of my core values. One of my challenges is that I generally assume others are also being honest. It’s nice to be trusting and hopefully it won’t lead me too far astray. As the saying goes - "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." In...

You can’t save daylight

You can’t save daylight

I cannot figure out why we still engage in the seemingly pointless exercise of daylight savings time. I can’t recall anyone expressing any benefits to the exercise. Daylight is like air in a ballon. If you squeeze it out of one part, it goes to the other part. No...

Permission or forgiveness

Permission or forgiveness

There’s a saying that it’s better to ask forgiveness than ask permission. This may be true in some situations and is surely a bad idea in others. Consider the downside risk; if it's relatively small, go for it and ask forgiveness if needed. Big risks warrant a...

First dibs!

A couple nights ago, Trish, Roli and I were hanging out on our porch. Trish and I were each sitting on chairs with Roli on the floor. I went in to turn on a light and Roli took the opportunity to quietly climb onto the chair I had been using. Admittedly, he uses it...

My gym reopened and I’m feeling it. I went to two classes last week and two more this week. As usual, I did plenty of things I wouldn't do on my own. I did lots of running, rowing, burpees, push-ups and plenty of other things that will help me become more fit. Most of...
