Do what works
Looking for the next great thing might be a waste of time. If you have things that work, keep doing them unless they stop working. Ideally, do the important things every day. If you don’t have time to do what’s important, you may want to rethink how you spend your time.
In our movement classes, there a few things that I cover every week. They are the best exercises that I have found for a big impact on most people. As tempting as it is to chase variety, that’s probably not what we need. Most of us need to find a few things that work really well. Once we find those, we should do them frequently. Unless they stop working, there is little need to look for something new.
What do you do to make sure you daily routine includes what’s important?
Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Experience or capture
It’s peak foliage season here in the mountains. Stunning colors everywhere you look. One price of this joy is hordes of leaf peepers invading the area. Everywhere I go, people are taking pictures. Walking around the lake, pulled over on the side of the road. Sometimes...
More than one way…
We frequently have friends and family stay with us. I noticed that we each have our own way of loading the dishwasher. Plates upright or leaned over. Knife blades down or up. Items put in no particular pattern or treated like a game of Tetris to maximize efficiency....
The last straw
A lot of small actions that seem insignificant add up more than we might expect. Sometimes it feels like nothing is happening, then suddenly a big change happens. If the actions were detrimental, the change results in decline. The straw that broke the camel’s back...
3D Plank
Here is a modified plank you can use to fire up your core. Test Range of motion (ROM) baseline: * Forward fold with straight legs (touch your toes or the floor) * Hip rotation to each side with feet under hips and palms together in front of you Drill Choose a starting...
Multi-tasking
We can do more than one thing at once, but we can only pay attention to one at a time. Whether we like it or not, attempting to multi-task sacrifices the quality of everything. So why do it? If you need to do something you do not like, stack it with something you want...
Surprising Simplicity
Just because you haven’t found the solution, doesn’t mean it’s complicated. Roli has been a big puller ever since we got him. His foster family had used a head halter, but we found it ineffective. We could control him, but he would still stiffen his neck and pull. We...
Feel good or grow
If you want to feel good, surround yourself with people who see you as the best. The upside is that you might inspire others to improve. People want to be the best and will chase your performance. The downside is that you might not improve as fast. If you’re not...
Familiar and novel (by Trish)
When it comes to weekend adventures, Jim, Roli and I are creatures of habit. Despite the fact that we’ve easily got hundreds of choices within a 30 minute radius of our home, we tend to stick to the same handful of places. As the weekend draws near, I sometimes think,...
Crucial feedback
Sometimes the feedback you need most hits the hardest. You're doing what feels right and you learn it might not be what someone wants or needs. As tough as it is to hear, it’s might be the fastest path to improvement. Ignorance is bliss and knowledge is power. Would...
Deep recovery
The higher the stress you experience, the deeper recovery you need. Stress can come from work, training, relationships or events. Your body probably can’t differentiate between different types of stress. As a result, you need to be careful about using one type of...
Idiosyncrasy
If you spend a lot of time alone, you might start behaving oddly without realizing it. Apparently I have taken to muttering to myself a lot and making a smacking noise before I speak. I noticed the muttering when Trish kept asking me to repeat things she hadn’t heard....
Stop and think
One of the responses to Get back on the horse was someone who wants to watch eating habits & make better choices. I’m in the same boat so I suggested a challenge for the next week: When we’re reaching for the bad choice, ask ourselves, “Is it worth it?” She added,...
