When in doubt, eliminate negativity

When in doubt, eliminate negativity

I recently wrote about competing goals. The conflict goes on until you achieve or let go of one of the goals. I keep debating whether to save money or pay down debt. Should I do the thing that might make me happy or eliminate the thing I know makes me unhappy?

Having a nice pile of savings sounds great. No worries when unexpected expenses come up, just use some money from savings. It also gives a sense of freedom. If you see something you really want, you can use savings to take the opportunity instead of passing it by and lamenting what could have been.

Debt on the other hand feels like a millstone. Making the payments every month is a reminder that we bought things we couldn’t afford. It’s not as bad as it sounds. Our current situation is good compared to our foolish 20s and 30s. Still, before we moved back to the US, we were debt free for a few years. Having some debt reminds me how amazing debt-free living felt.

When it comes down to it, the debt bothers me a lot more than lack of savings. Potential happiness is not as compelling as a guaranteed reduction in unhappiness.

What opportunities do you have to eliminate stress or negativity?

Hopefully, my questions cause you to reflect on your own thinking, relationships or choices. Maybe I even inspire you to make positive changes.

Home

There are times that I wonder whether moving to the mountains was a good idea. We’re pretty far from everything and it’s tough developing a business with such a small population.   Then there are times when I know for sure we are home. Lake Chocorua has been stunning...

Is it worth it?

Is it worth it?

Trish and I were discussing health and I said I wasn't willing to optimize my health. She seemed surprised and asked me why. I want great health, but the cost of optimal health is too high. Some of the food and drink I love doesn’t optimize my health. Still, it...

Trish and I were talking about retirement. Some people dream of it, others cannot imagine what they would do with all their free time and say, “I would get so bored!" I can’t remember the last time I was bored. I can easily imagine being retired and spending all of my...

Diagnosis – lever or crutch?

Diagnosis – lever or crutch?

Some diagnoses are descriptions of symptoms, with no indication of the cause. If your diagnosis is idiopathic (cause unknown), what use is it? I’ve been struggling to articulate my ideas around these limitations and I thought of a simple analogy. You come home at...

Family traditions

Family traditions

One of the best things about our family gatherings is that we always play games together. Although many of us are competitive, it’s all in good fun. People do things out of their comfort zone (drawing, charades, humming songs) and we laugh at ourselves and each other....

Unclear questions

Social media amuses me at times. In groups focused on nutrition or coaching, people sometimes post questions so vague that there are many interpretations. Even more amusing, some people answer the questions as if they are clear. Other people know the question is...

Daily gratitude (by Trish)

Ten years ago, when Jim and I moved to London for his job, I experienced some level of angst while figuring out what to do next in my career. As amazing as it was to have some time off to explore a new place, I found it challenging to be in a period of transition. A...

Get back on the horse

Get back on the horse

We sometimes get out of the routine of pursuing our passions. Avoid it for too long and your skills degrade. It might get to the point that you give up and feel like you can’t get it back. What if you can? After neglecting my handstand practice for too long, I decided...
