Sometimes we dream about moving somewhere, adopting a pet or buying that thing that will give us a big breakthrough. It can be disappointing and expensive if reality does not live up to our dreams.

Many years ago, Trish and I considered moving to San Francisco so we took a vacation there. Even though vacation is not like daily life, getting a sense of the area seemed worthwhile. After 4 or 5 days in the heart of the city, we realized it was too urban and sprawling for us. Maybe we could have made it work, but it didn’t seem worth the risk. That vacation helped us avoid potential disaster.

Life with dogs is great, a lot of work and not for everyone. If you’re considering getting a dog, maybe you can dog-sit for one of your friends for a few days to see what it’s really like. If you’re sure you want a certain breed, find an online group of owners and see what they rave (and cry) about. At least you’ll have an idea of what you’re getting yourself into.

Thinking about buying an expensive camera, lens or other expensive gear? It might be worth renting for a few days or a week. If using it changes your life, you’ll feel great about plunking down your money to own it. If not, you’ll be glad you tried it first.

If you’re considering a life-changing decision or getting ready to chase a dream, how could you test it first?
