Overcoming momentum can be the hardest thing about changing. The things we do every day happen almost automatically. Stopping such behaviors can feel impossible.

Instead of stopping that momentum, use a little nudge to change direction. When that is working, give another little nudge. Keep repeating this to slowly change direction with much less effort than a big change.

Back when I gave up soda, I did it by switching to coffee with cream and sugar. Still too much sugar, but probably only 1/3 as much. Over time, I reduced the sugar and cream and eventually I started to enjoy black coffee. An impossible switch from soda to black coffee became hardly noticeable over time.

Want to get moving, but can’t find the motivation? When you go to the grocery store, park at the far end instead of looking for a close spot. You have to walk a bit further, but spots are always easy to find. If you go to multiple stores in the same area, walk from store to store instead of moving the car.

Like to unwind at night with some television, but feel like you’re wasting time? Go to the same spot on the couch, but read a book, listen to music or plan for the next day.

What can you do to nudge yourself in a better direction?
