We’ve always done it this way

Sometimes when questioned why you do something, the response is, “We’ve always done it this way.” That might be true, but is it the best way? This came up frequently in my prior career as an internal auditor. Of course, it’s easier to apply this thinking to someone else than yourself.

Trish and I were discussing household chores and I realized that most of the division of chores is the same it’s been for years. Mostly this is because we’ve always done it this way. I wonder what would happen if we hit reset and started over.

Maybe we should list out all the chores and alternate picking the ones we want to do. Eventually they will all be selected and we each will have some we don’t mind and some we’d rather not have. What could be more fair than that?

How often do you question how you do things and find a better way?
